Art Exhibition of Studio of Military Artists named after M.B. Grekov

17 апреля 2025

The M.B. Grekov Studio, which recently celebrated its 90th anniversary, is a unique creative team where representatives of a rare profession work, the military artists. It is here that the history of Russian battle art is made. Significant events of our country, military battles, portraits of great commanders, the daily life of the Russian army – all this is embodied in numerous works of art, the authors of which are masters of different generations and major Russian artists, including academicians of the Russian Academy of Arts, whose works have become classics of Russian art.

During the Great Patriotic War and in the post-war years, the Grekov artists made a great contribution to the perpetuation of military exploits. Many of the studio’s artists were participants in the Great Patriotic War and reached Berlin. Throughout the war artists of the M.B. Grekov Studio served in the active army and continued to record everything they saw and experienced, which enabled them to reliably and convincingly convey the living breath of these terrible and hard times.

Before us is an impartial reflection of military reality, rendered by the brush of battle painters. The war became a school of professional skill for them, connecting artists with the army, bringing them closer to the Russian soldier at a moment of the highest upsurge of his spiritual and physical strength. Sketches of combat episodes and frontline landscapes, every portrait made from life, each sketch – this entire pictorial chronicle became an invaluable basis for the works created.
